Prolapsed Intervertebral Disc

A prolapsed intervertebral disc (also known as slipped or herniated disc) is a condition that occurs when the spongy part of a disc that lies between two adjacent vertebrae in the spine comes out and presses on the nerve. Prolapsed intervertebral disc is the sudden or slowly progressing movement of ont intervertebral disc backwards into the spinal channel.

Causes of Prolapsed Intervertebral Disc

One of the causes is the weakening or a tearing of the tissue ring due to over straining of the vertebral column. However, a prolapsed disc can also occur as a consequence of an injury such as falling, repeated straining, hard lifting, and also overweight.


Symptoms of Prolapsed Intervertebral Disc

The main symptom of a prolapsed intervertebral is back pain. This is usually something that most people tolerate. Severe pain and unrelenting neck or low back pain that will radiate into the regions served by affected nerve roots that are irritated or impinged by the herniated material.

Treatment of Prolapsed Intervertebral Disc

There are several treatment possibilities to relieve the acute pain: pain-killers, relaxants, anti inflammatory drugs, ice and heat packs, physiotherapy and even surgery. Surgery is required when the disc prolapse cause significant neurological impairment such as signs of paralysis.
