Olecranon Bursa

Olecranon bursitis (informally known as "student's elbow" or "baker's elbow") is a condition characterised by pain, swelling and inflammation of the olecranon bursa located in the elbow.
Causes of Olecranon Bursa
Olecranon bursitis has many different causes of this extra fluid collection. Leaning on the elbow a lot or even hitting it on an object once can result in swelling. People who rest their elbows on hard objects while studying, talking on the phone, working out, or driving often have this problem. A hard blow to the tip of the elbow can cause the bursa to produce excess fluid and swell.
Symptoms of Olecranon Bursa
Swelling is often the first symptom. The skin on the back of the elbow is loose, which means that a small amount of swelling may not be noticed right away.
There will also be Significant redness around the back of the elbow and breaks in the skin (scrapes/cuts) around the swollen area
Treatment of Olecranon Bursa
The first step of treatment is accomplished by draining the fluid from the swollen bursa. This is done in the doctor's office using a needle to aspirate (suck out) the fluid from the swollen bursa. . Fluid removal helps relieve symptoms and gives your doctor a sample that can be looked at in a laboratory to identify if any bacteria are growing.
