Ingrown Toe Nail

When a toenail is ingrown, the sides or corners of the nail curl down and dig into the skin of the toe, causing swelling, pain and redness.
Causes of Ingrown Toe Nail
Ingrown toenails are a very common problem affecting primarily the great toenail. Pain and inflammation at the spot where the nail curls into the skin occurs first. The main cause of ingrown toe nail is unsuitable footwear, including shoes with inadequate toe-box room and tight stockings that apply top and or side pressures. Improper trimming of toenails can cause the corners of the nail to dig into the skin. Nails should be trimmed straight across, not rounded.
Symptoms of Ingrown Toe Nail
Symptoms of an ingrown nail include pain along the margins of the nail, worsening of pain when wearing tight footwear, and sensitivity to pressure of any kind, even the weight of bedsheets.
Early in the course of an ingrown toenail, the end of the toe becomes reddened and painful with mild swelling. There is no pus or drainage. It may feel warm to the touch, but you will not have a fever.
Later, extra skin and tissue will grow around the sharp point of the nail. A yellowish drainage may begin.
Treatment of Ingrown Toe Nail
If no acute infection is found, then the nail will be elevated and conservative treatment recommended. This consists of warm soaks, proper shoes, and frequent cleaning of the nail. If an infection is present, then surgical removal of either part of the nail or the whole nail and drainage of the abscess will be needed.
