Bunion and Hallux Valgus

The big toe of the foot is called the hallux. If the big toe starts to deviate inward in the direction of the baby toe the condition is called hallux valgus. As the big toe drifts over into valgus, a bump starts to develop on the inside of the big toe over the metatarsal bone. The enlargement actually represents additional bone formation, often in combination with a misalignment of the big toe.
Causes of Bunion and Hallux Valgus
Bunions most commonly affect women. Some studies report that bunions occur nearly 10 times more frequently in women. Tight-fitting shoes, especially high-heel and narrow-toed shoes, might increase the risk for bunion formation. Bunions are reported to be more prevalent in people who wear shoes than in barefoot people.Symptoms of Bunion and Hallux Valguss

The symptoms of bunions include irritated skin around the bunion, pain when walking, joint redness and pain, and possible shift of the big toe toward the other toes. Blisters may form more easily around the site of the bunion as well. Having bunions can also make it harder to find shoes that fit properly; bunions may force a person to have to buy a larger size shoe to accommodate the width the bunion creates.
Treatment of Bunion and Hallux Valgus
The treatment of a bunion depends entirely on how uncomfortable it is. The initial goal of treatment options is to relieve pressure on the bunion and any symptoms that may be present and to halt or slow the progression of the joint deformity. There is no effective way of getting rid a bunion without surgery.Find out how your foot Problem can be more effectively treated.
